Here in the San Francisco Bay Area we have some of the finest healthcare professionals who specialize in brain injuries. And, as a San Francisco injury attorney I have read numerous CT scan reports, especially in brain injury cases.
And like other professionals that attempt to assists brain injury victims, it hasn’t occurred to me or many others that those CT scans that can be so helpful in treating a brain injury victim might actually be harmful. Until now.
The FDA has widened its investigation into radiation overdoses among patients that receive CT scans and the problem may be nationwide. According the the LA Times, previous investigations by the FDA revealed problems with CT perfusion scans.
And while the Times article indicates that the problem at first may have been considered to reside with a particular manufacturer of scanning equipment and a particular hospital, now radiation overdoses have been found at different hospitals in different states using equipment made by different manufacturers.
It is estimated that 150,000 CT perfusion scans are conducted in the United States each year.
