Brain injuries, ranging from traumatic (TBI) to mild traumatic (MTBI) are very serious problem for people of all ages not only here in San Francisco but across the country.
In the United States, numerous individuals suffer brain injuries every single day. Brain injuries are the leading cause of death and disability among children. Such injuries are often caused by car accidents, trucking accidents, falls, and sports accidents. But today researchers believe they may be closer to treating the damage to the brain caused by TBI and MTBI injuries.
Currently, there is no known way to repair the actual damage to the brain. In a recent study, however, researchers discovered that feeding amino acids to mice that had suffered brain injuries, helped to restore their cognitive abilities in the areas of the brain that had been damaged. The amino acids were specific branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) and were mixed with the drinking water of the mice.
The hope of researchers is that this new information will lead to future therapies for TBI patients.
