Senator John McCain (R-AZ), not exactly the personal injury attorney’s best friend, has announced his support for legislation that would allow the FDA to better regulate dietary supplements.
Dietary supplements are a huge industry in the United States. By any standard, it is a multi-billion
dollar business. And every year, consumers suffer serious personal injuries due to product defects in the supplements. But unlike drugs or the pharmaceutical industry, the FDA has little authority to regulate the contents of any supplement or the claims the claims that a supplement manufacturer makes about the product.
Well, Congress is trying to do something about that and Sen. McCain has pretty clearly stated his support for the legislation. The bill would make the manufacturers of supplements list the supplement’s ingredients on the bottle or packaging.
It would also require that adverse effects to the supplement be listed on the packaging as well and allow the FDA to recall supplements that it finds harmful or dangerous to consumers.
Dietary supplements cause personal injuries and harm due to product defects every year and greater regulation is needed. It’s good to have the Senator on-board.
