Dr. Ryan was a famous plastic surgeon in the Los Angeles area.

According to the San Francisco paper, the doctor was texting while he was driving, or at least seconds before the accident.

Texting while driving as well as driver inattention is a leading cause of personal injury accidents. Here at San Francisco Personal Injury Law Answers we have written about the dangers of distractions while driving and even produced a video on the subject – see personal injury risk due to technology.

According to reports, the doctor’s dog – Jill – was in the car with him at the time of the crash. The dog suffered head injuries as well as injuries to her paw and eye.

The official cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

The Grayhound was headed to Los Angeles and was carrying 36 passengers. According to the San Francisco paper and other media reports, it appears that the driver swerved to avoid another accident involving a SUV but struck the vehicle and then slammed into a concrete divide. The bus then apparently went off the shoulder of the road and down a fifteen-foot embankment smashing the front of the bus into rubble against a tree.

The driver was among those killed in the accident. Many of the passengers suffered serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The additional passengers were eventually picked up by another Grayhound bus and taken to their final destination.

Both Northbound lanes of Highway 99 were closed for several hours as emergency personnel and police worked the scene of the crash.

According to the San Francisco paper, authorities are still investigating the accident as well as the initial accident that the bus driver was attempting to avoid when he collided with the SUV.

A fifteen (15) year old girl is dead after being injured in a high speed chase that took CHP officers and a fleeing felon through the streets of San Jose.

The girl was injured when the car that she was riding in was struck by the suspect’s vehicle after he fled CHP. The California Highway Patrol was pursing the suspect in such a high risk high speed chase because he had made an illegal turn. It was only after the chase that the officers learned that the suspect, who is now being held on murder charges, had a previous felony and a history of running from police.

And this unfortunate death of an innocent bystander due to a high speed chase by law enforcement is not as uncommon as you might think. According to the San Jose Mercury News, 424 injury victims have been killed as a result of high speed police pursuits across the country. 40 of those deaths have taken place in California. And we are second only to Texas, which had 44.

Pursuits like the one in this case – in an urban environment – are risky. And the risks are well known. There are many people who disagree with the decision of police to engage in high speed chases in situations like this one.

PursuitWatch.org is an organization that advocates pursuing suspects only when they are suspected of committing a violent crime. This is the policy of the San Jose’s police department but apparently not that of CHP.

As quoted by the San Jose paper, John Philips, head of PursuitWatch stated, “What we have here is a dumb young criminal making another poor decision . . . . We should not compound their bad decisions with our own.” Well said.
